An annual event to look forward to in the Florida Garden is the COLEUS plantings, made possible by our neighbors, Dave and Laura Clark. Dave leads the Plant Breeding Program in the Institute for Food and Agricultural Sciences at UF, and one of his specialities is coleus. Each year, we are most grateful when Dave and Laura give us a selection of their newest varieties, with wonderful names like Marrooned, Coleosaurus, and Redhead. We use coleus, with their vibrant and colorful leaves, to brighten up spots in the yard, otherwise limited to the green leaves of the plants that have completed blooming. There are many patterns and colors each year. Coleus do not survive a hard frost in our garden, so we use them as an annual. The current varieties do well in shade or sun. Our coleus line the driveway under the live oak tree as well as amongst the azaleas at the sunny end of our Palm Row. They will be with us all summer and into the fall.
