Spring planting in the Florida Garden entails the replacement of annuals and tender perennials that did not survive the several nights of frost last winter. The replanting of our COLEUS beds is something to look forward to each spring. The students from the UF Horticultural Program have an annual sale of their newest varieties that are being tried out for their commercial value, as a fund-raiser for their annual trip. Several connected greenhouses are filled with numerous varieties, if you get there early. This year, we wanted to plant some full sun varieties in a small bed next to our lanai, easily visible from the pool and our dining area. Prior attempts there had included lantanas, salvia, and other perennials which failed to survive the hot summer or winter frosts. Three varieties of coleus with names like “Ruby Slippers, Wasabi, and Wicked Hot” were planted in that bed, with several more at the end of the Palm Row. We expect them to grow vigorously to fill these areas with lots of colorful foliage for the 2022 growing season.
