In the Florida garden, the Christmas holiday is ushered in by the parade of Camellia Japonica blooms, which are starting now and will continue into the New Year. It has been a good year for the Japonicas; a moist summer led to a warm, dry fall. The Camellia Reticulata bushes will be blooming nicely as well, but a bit later. The foliage looks great, with deep green, glossy leaves. The growth of the bushes’ heights and widths has been gratifying, likely due to modest fertilization in the spring and early fall. We have seven or eight bushes in bloom now, with loads of buds for the next 4-6 weeks. We now have plenty of flowers for a bowl full to add to the holiday cheer.
