Early February is a quiet time in the garden, with time to prune the trees and perennials, and to start fertilizing. It is a good time to feature the little things in the garden, such as my herbs. Joyce and I enjoy fresh herbs on soups and salads, so we have two large self-watering pots with rosemary, chives, oregano, cilantro, and basil. Separate are pots of parsley and dill. Later, we will grow sweet marjoram. A large lemon grass and a bay tree are permanent features. Our bed next to the house is devoid of flowers, but my neighbor, a UF plant breeder, gave me lots of kale and cabbage plants. The rabbits devoured the kale but the cabbage is doing great. Under a large camelia bush, I have my nursery for starting new plants. My current projects include five dogwood and five redbud trees from the Arbor Society, three camellia japonica rootings, and two camellia sinensis (tea) bushes. After the risk of frost is past, I will give them to neighbors or find a spot in the yard.
