CAMELLIA SASANQUA bushes lead the Camellia parade which will continue in the Florida Garden for another two or three months. These harbingers of winter only last for a few weeks, but extend the color of the gardens forward in time when most flowering plants are shutting down. Sasanqua Cammelia shrubs are smaller and have more delicate leaves than the C. japonica bushes. Their flowers are prone to shattering in a heavy rain or after picking for a vase. This year, perhaps because of a warm, dry October, they are blooming now, even earlier than usual, around the Christmas holiday. We have six or seven Sasanquas, most in the Cammelia garden along the back of the garden, but our two biggest bushes flank the entrance to the front door, greeting our guests for Thanksgiving dinner with a carpet of pink petals on the walk.
