Week of October 30, 2022

The Florida Garden tends to fade as the perennials (Pentas, Lantanas, Firebush) gradually lose their blossoms for supporting our local population of pollinators. Exceptions to this reduction in color have been our coleus beds, which have grown along our driveway into three foot tall banks of bright bronze, red, and green. These plants came from our neighbor, who breeds coleus (and other plants) at the University of Florida. When most annuals and perennials look quite tired after a hot summer and very dry October, the coleus look as fresh as ever and will stay that way until the first frost. We will then pull them out and till in some compost, to get ready to plant next year’s varieties, of course saving some room for our old favorites.
